The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a stringent measure set to take effect from May 1, 2024. Shops and establishments failing to display signboards in Marathi or Devanagari script will face double property tax, according to a decision made public after a review meeting chaired by BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.
Compliance Deadline and Crackdown
The decision comes in line with the Supreme Court’s directive and the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Rules, which require establishments to display nameplates in Marathi or Devanagari script. The Supreme Court had set a two-month deadline for compliance, expiring on November 25, 2023. Since then, the BMC has been diligently inspecting establishments and issuing prosecution notices to violators.
Enforcement and Penalties
During the inspection period until March 31, 2024, a significant majority of establishments (about 96.50%) were found compliant, while legal action was taken against those failing to adhere to the regulations. A total of 1,928 cases reached the courts, resulting in fines totaling ₹13.94 lakhs. Additionally, administrative proceedings have been initiated against remaining violators.
Future Measures and Consequences
BMC Chief Gagrani has directed strict enforcement of the Supreme Court’s directives, warning of consequences for non-compliance. Starting May 1, 2024, shops without Marathi nameplates will face doubled property tax, and licenses for illuminated boards lacking Marathi script will be revoked immediately. Violators will be required to bear expenses ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹1.5 lakhs for compliance.
