The government has announced that consumers who are not seeing the benefits of the recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate cut can now lodge complaints through multiple platforms. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has released a set of FAQs guiding consumers on how to report such grievances.

No Price Reduction After GST Cuts? Govt Launches Whatsapp Helpline To Complain

Where to File Complaints

Consumers can:

  • Call the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) at the toll-free number 1915.
  • Use WhatsApp to file complaints at 8800001915.
  • Submit queries or complaints online through the Integrated Grievance Redressal Mechanism (INGRAM) portal.

These mechanisms are aimed at ensuring that companies and retailers pass on the reduced tax benefits to customers.

GST Structure Simplified

Effective September 22, the GST framework was simplified from four tax slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%) to just two: 5% and 18%. According to CBIC, this rationalization has led to reduced prices on 99% of commonly used goods, making essentials and daily-use items more affordable for the public.

Mixed Industry Response

While the government has not yet activated a formal anti-profiteering system for such cases, it is closely monitoring pricing trends. Officials noted that several companies have already reduced product prices voluntarily to reflect the lower tax rates. However, multiple social media posts suggest that some businesses are not passing on these benefits, sparking consumer dissatisfaction.

Why It Matters

The move to allow complaint registration gives customers a stronger voice in ensuring transparency and fairness in India’s tax system. It also signals the government’s intent to hold businesses accountable for profiteering and to protect consumer rights in the wake of one of the biggest GST simplifications since its introduction.
