IndiGo, a prominent budget airline in India, has earned a place in the top 20 of Airline Ratings’ 2025 list of the safest low-cost carriers. Ranked 19th, the airline’s safety credentials were scrutinized based on several factors, including fleet age, serious incidents, and pilot training. This recognition reflects IndiGo’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high safety standards for its passengers.

No Indian Airline Eligible For Top 25 Safest Airlines List Globally

Key Rankings and U.S. Carriers in the Top 25

The 2025 ranking also highlighted five U.S. budget airlines among the top 25 safest carriers. These include:

  • Frontier Airlines (5)
  • Southwest Airlines (9)
  • Sun Country Airlines (15)
  • JetBlue Airways (17)
  • Allegiant Air (21)

Notably, Spirit Airlines, which had been a regular presence on the list in previous years, was excluded from the 2025 ranking due to its recent bankruptcy filing.

Hong Kong Express Takes the Top Spot

The top position in this year’s low-cost category went to Hong Kong Express, a subsidiary of Cathay Pacific. The airline was recognized for its flawless safety record, with no serious incidents reported. This newcomer’s exceptional safety track record helped it secure the first-place spot in the low-cost category.

New Additions to the Safety Ranking

This year’s ranking also welcomed several new airlines:

  • Zipair (23) from Japan
  • Jet2 (14) from the UK
  • Air Baltic (25) from Latvia

These airlines have impressed aviation experts with their dedication to passenger safety and operational integrity.

The Safety Evaluation Process

Airline Ratings evaluates nearly 400 airlines annually based on key safety criteria such as:

  • Incident rates and recent fatal accidents
  • Fleet age and size
  • Pilot training standards
  • Financial stability

As Sharon Petersen, CEO of Airline Ratings, explained, “Financial instability within an airline can lead to significant operational challenges, automatically disqualifying it as a candidate for the safest list.”

Conclusion

IndiGo’s place on the list of the safest low-cost airlines is a testament to its commitment to safety and quality service. With global players like Hong Kong Express taking the top position, the rankings offer valuable insights for passengers seeking the safest options for their travels in 2025.
