In a major step to improve access to cooking fuel, the Centre has allowed consumers to purchase 5 kg LPG cylinders without submitting address proof. Buyers only need to show a valid identity document, making the process quicker and more accessible.

This move is especially aimed at migrant workers, students, and transient populations who often struggle with address documentation.

Over 5.7 Lakh Cylinders Sold Since March 23

The impact of this policy has been immediate. Officials revealed that over 5.7 lakh 5 kg LPG cylinders have been sold since March 23, indicating strong demand.

  • More than 71,000 cylinders were sold in a single day recently
  • In some updates, sales have even crossed 6.6 lakh units as distribution scaled up

These small cylinders, also called Free Trade LPG (FTL), are available at nearby distributorships across the country.

Why the Government Introduced This Move

The policy comes amid supply pressure and rising demand, partly triggered by global disruptions.

To ensure smooth availability, the government is:

  • Expanding access to smaller LPG cylinders
  • Reducing dependency on standard 14.2 kg cylinders
  • Making fuel accessible without documentation hurdles

The move also helps bridge supply gaps while maintaining equitable distribution.

Key Features of 5 kg LPG Cylinders

Here’s what makes these cylinders different:

  • Available over-the-counter at LPG distributors
  • No address proof required, only valid ID
  • Sold at market price (non-subsidised)
  • Designed for short-term or flexible usage

Unlike regular household cylinders, these are ideal for temporary or emergency needs.

Balancing Supply and Demand

To manage the situation, the government has also taken broader measures:

  • Commercial LPG supply capped at 70% of pre-crisis levels
  • Dedicated coordination between Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL
  • Increased monitoring to prevent hoarding and black marketing

Despite demand spikes, authorities maintain that there is no nationwide shortage of LPG.

What It Means for Consumers

For users, this move brings:

  • Easier and faster access to LPG
  • Relief for those without permanent addresses
  • A flexible alternative during supply disruptions

However, since these cylinders are non-subsidised, they may be costlier than regular domestic LPG refills.
