Mahindra & Mahindra is prepping up to introduce the hotly anticipated 5-door version of its popular Thar SUV in India later this year. According to recent reports, production of the new body style will commence in June 2024.
The carmaker is targeting initial output of around 4,000 units per month to meet the expected strong demand. Manufacturing will take place on the existing Thar 3-door production line without hampering its capacities.
Mahindra has trademarked several name options for the 5-door variant including Thar Armada. An official debut is rumored by July followed by price announcement and sales opening in the festive season possibly.
Loaded With New Features
Spy images of Thar 5-door prototypes reveal a host of fresh additions over current model including – 10.25-inch touchscreen, connected car technology, electric sunroof and front & rear armrests.
Exterior changes are visible through revised grille, new alloy wheels and tweaked LED tail lamps. The feature upgrades will likely flow into the 3-door Thar as well during its midlife facelift.
Familiar Engine Options
Powertrain choices will continue from existing options – a 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol mated to 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes. The innate off-road hardware capabilities also remain through 4X4 system with possibility of new rear-wheel drive version too.
Pricing will be an important factor for Thar 5-door to expand appeal beyond lifestyle buyers to family and urban users as well. By entering volume segments, Thar could propel Mahindra SUV sales even higher.
The lifestyle vehicle’s arrival with enhanced practicality and technology continues Mahindra’s robust UV offensive in India where demand is still going strong.
