In a major digital upgrade for India’s identity ecosystem, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new Aadhaar app that lets users securely carry their Aadhaar card on smartphones. The app, available for free on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, aims to make identity verification easier, faster, and more private—without the need for physical cards.

Key Features: Privacy, Control, and Convenience
The new Aadhaar app offers several advanced features designed to enhance user privacy and accessibility:
- Multi-profile Management: Users can add and manage up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single device if all share the same registered mobile number—ideal for families.
- Biometric Security Lock: A built-in biometric lock ensures that Aadhaar details are accessible only to the rightful owner, preventing unauthorized use.
- Selective Data Sharing: Users can choose what information to share—such as name and photo—while hiding sensitive details like address or date of birth.
- QR Code Verification: Aadhaar details can now be verified instantly using QR codes, enabling smooth, paperless authentication at banks, government offices, and other service centers.
- Offline Access: Users can access stored Aadhaar details even without an internet connection, once verified.
- Usage History Monitoring: The app provides an activity log to track when and where your Aadhaar has been used, strengthening transparency and trust.
How to Download and Set Up the App
- Download the official “Aadhaar” app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and choose a preferred language.
- Verify your identity using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- Complete face authentication to confirm ownership.
- Create a six-digit security PIN for added protection.
After setup, users can instantly access or share their Aadhaar details securely using biometric authentication or PIN access.
New Aadhaar App vs mAadhaar App
While both apps serve Aadhaar users, they have distinct roles:
- The new Aadhaar app is for everyday ID use—showing, sharing, or managing digital Aadhaar cards.
- The mAadhaar app focuses on document management—downloading e-Aadhaar PDFs, ordering physical cards, and updating contact information.
Together, they provide a complete ecosystem for digital identity management.
