Bengaluru may soon see a significant change to one of its most recognisable public services, as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced plans to recommend renaming the city’s Namma Metro as “Basava Metro.” The decision, he said, is meant to honour 12th-century social reformer Basavanna, whose teachings of equality, liberty, and fraternity influenced figures like Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Namma Metro Can Be Changed To Basava Metro

Speaking at the valedictory ceremony of Basava Samskruti Abhiyana-2025, Siddaramaiah emphasised Basavanna’s efforts to dismantle caste hierarchies and promote social harmony. He also highlighted initiatives like mandating Basavanna’s portraits in government offices and approving a Vachana University, further embedding his philosophy into public life.

Social Equality and Symbolism

The CM stressed that renaming the metro goes beyond symbolism — it reflects a broader commitment to social equality. “We are all Shudras… Basavanna opposed the stagnant caste system and established a new faith based on equality,” Siddaramaiah said. The state government, he added, is focused on uplifting communities across castes and religions through various welfare programs.

Mixed Reactions From Citizens

Despite the government’s intentions, the renaming proposal has sparked mixed reactions. Many Bengalureans strongly oppose dropping the “Namma” prefix, which they view as an emotion and identity deeply connected to the city’s commuters over the past decade.

Critics argue that rather than renaming infrastructure projects, the government should focus on practical concerns such as reducing peak-hour congestion, adding more coaches, and fast-tracking under-construction metro lines.

A Debate Beyond Names

The debate reflects a broader tension between cultural symbolism and urban priorities. While the renaming could honour a revered social reformer, residents fear it may divert attention from improving public transport. Whether “Namma Metro” retains its beloved identity or evolves into “Basava Metro” remains to be seen — but the discussion underscores how infrastructure projects often carry deeper social and emotional significance.
