In response to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of Mpox as a Public Health Emergency, the Union Health Ministry of India has directed airports and land ports to increase vigilance and enhance surveillance.
Although India has not yet reported any cases of Mpox, the precautionary measures are part of the government’s proactive approach to preventing the potential spread of the virus within the country.
Heightened Alert at Airports and Land Ports
The Ministry has issued directives to officials at airports and land ports bordering Bangladesh and Pakistan to be on high alert. This follows reports of Mpox cases outside Africa, specifically in Sweden and Pakistan. While there is no immediate threat within India, the government is taking preemptive steps to ensure that international passengers showing symptoms of Mpox are quickly identified and managed.
This heightened surveillance was prompted by a high-level meeting chaired by PK Mishra, the principal secretary to the prime minister. The meeting emphasized the importance of monitoring international arrivals and maintaining readiness for any potential outbreak.
Designated Nodal Centres for Mpox Management
To manage potential Mpox cases, the government has identified three key hospitals in Delhi—Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital, and Lady Hardinge Hospital—as nodal centres for isolation and treatment. These hospitals have been designated to handle any Mpox cases that may arise, ensuring that patients receive prompt and effective care.
Additionally, the Centre has instructed all state governments to identify and prepare designated hospitals within their jurisdictions to manage Mpox cases. This measure aims to create a nationwide network of facilities equipped to handle the virus.
Enhanced Testing Capabilities
Currently, 32 laboratories across India are equipped to test for Mpox. The Health Ministry has stressed the importance of enhancing the testing infrastructure to ensure early diagnosis. This expansion of testing capabilities is crucial in the event of a local outbreak, enabling quick detection and containment of the virus.
Global Mpox Situation
Globally, Mpox has seen a rise in cases, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where 16,000 cases have been reported, resulting in 548 deaths. The recent reports of Mpox in Sweden and Pakistan have raised concerns about the virus spreading beyond Africa, prompting global health authorities to increase vigilance.
