India is entering a defining phase of its artificial intelligence journey, marked by rapid innovation, economic transformation, and widespread digital adoption. Reinforcing its long-term commitment to the country, Microsoft has announced its largest-ever investment in Asia—US$17.5 billion over four years (2026–2029)—aimed at strengthening India’s cloud and AI infrastructure, skilling programs, and operational expansion. Microsoft Advances AI Adoption in India with Major Infrastructure and Workforce Initiatives
Microsoft’s investment focuses on expanding hyperscale infrastructure, enhancing sovereign-ready AI solutions, and empowering India’s workforce. A major part of this investment will accelerate the India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad, set to go live by mid-2026. Expected to be Microsoft’s largest hyperscale presence in India, it will include three availability zones equivalent to two Eden Gardens stadiums in size. The company will also expand existing datacenter regions in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune to support low-latency, mission-critical performance for enterprises, government, and startups nationwide.
A key highlight is the integration of Microsoft AI into India’s digital public platforms, including e-Shram and the National Career Service (NCS). This move aims to benefit 310 million informal workers by enhancing job matching, multilingual access, skill-demand predictions, and resume creation through Azure OpenAI Service. These upgrades strengthen India’s social security systems, which already cover more than 94 crore citizens, and deepen Microsoft’s collaboration with national employment initiatives.
Building an AI-Ready India: Microsoft Expands Skilling and Sovereign Cloud Solutions
Skilling remains central to India’s AI readiness, and Microsoft has doubled its commitment to train 20 million people by 2030. Through its ADVANTA(I)GE India initiative, 5.6 million individuals have already received AI-related training since 2025, leading to over 125,000 job and entrepreneurial opportunities. This nationwide effort supports the vision of developing an AI-empowered workforce capable of driving innovation.
To advance digital sovereignty, Microsoft introduced Sovereign Public Cloud and Sovereign Private Cloud solutions for India, enabling organizations to deploy secure, compliant AI workloads within national borders. Microsoft 365 Copilot will also begin in-country data processing by late 2025, reinforcing security, governance, and performance for regulated sectors such as government, BFSI, and healthcare.
