Microsoft is doubling down on artificial intelligence as both a cost-saving engine and growth enabler. A recent Bloomberg report revealed that the tech giant saved more than $500 million last year in its call centers alone by deploying AI, even as it laid off thousands to streamline operations and fund further AI expansion.

Microsoft has begun using AI tools to automate and manage customer interactions, especially with smaller clients, according to Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff. By automating segments like customer service and inside sales, the company significantly reduced operational costs—saving over half a billion dollars in just one year. This effort reflects AI’s growing role in real-world enterprise workflows.
Layoffs Reflect Restructuring Around AI
Last week, Microsoft announced that nearly 4 percent of its global workforce—approximately 9,000 jobs—would be eliminated. This comes on top of 6,000 layoffs earlier in May. These job cuts coincide with the company’s aggressive push to reallocate funds toward AI infrastructure, especially data centers that power large language models like OpenAI’s GPT-4, which Microsoft has integrated across its platforms.

AI is not only transforming customer service. According to the Bloomberg report, Althoff stated that 35 percent of the code used in Microsoft’s new products is now being generated by AI. This has helped reduce time-to-market and improve engineering productivity, providing tangible returns on Microsoft’s heavy AI investment.

To support its AI ambitions, Microsoft plans to spend $80 billion in capital expenditures this fiscal year—most of it focused on building and expanding data centers. These facilities are critical for alleviating the ongoing capacity bottlenecks that constrain the delivery of AI-based services.
