Microsoft is expanding its AI capabilities beyond code generation with the launch of Agent Mode in Excel and Word — a powerful new feature that lets users create complex spreadsheets, documents, and presentations from a single prompt.

From “Vibe Coding” To “Vibe Working”
The concept is inspired by “vibe coding,” where developers build apps by writing simple AI prompts. Now, Microsoft is applying that same approach to Office productivity tools, enabling anyone — even without technical expertise — to build sophisticated reports, models, or proposals using natural language.
Agent Mode: A Smarter Copilot
Agent Mode goes beyond the standard Copilot assistance. It uses OpenAI’s GPT-5 to break down large, multi-step tasks into smaller, logical processes — all of which are visible in a sidebar as they’re executed. This means users can see how the AI plans, reasons, and builds complex outputs, almost like watching an automated macro work in real time.
“Agent Mode lets you create board-ready presentations or consultant-level documents in minutes,” said Sumit Chauhan, Corporate VP of Microsoft’s Office Product Group.
Office Agent in Copilot Chat
Alongside Agent Mode, Microsoft is launching a new Office Agent in Copilot Chat, powered by Anthropic models. This conversational AI can generate full PowerPoint presentations or Word documents simply from a “vibe working” chatbot exchange — making document creation more intuitive and collaborative.
Built With Reliability In Mind
Microsoft says special care was taken with Excel, as the data it manages is mission-critical for many businesses. Agent Mode ensures that all generated sheets are auditable, refreshable, and verifiable, with a strong validation loop across sub-agents to maintain accuracy.
