India’s passenger vehicle segment ended March 2026 on a high note, and despite the continued dominance of SUVs, the Maruti Dzire secured the top position with 21,224 units sold, highlighting steady demand for compact sedans.

Compared to the SUV-heavy trend, this performance shows that practical, fuel-efficient cars still attract a large segment of buyers.

Maruti Dzire Tops March 2026 Sales, Defying SUV Trend with Strong Sedan Demand

Following closely, the Tata Punch, including its electric version, recorded 20,977 units, maintaining its popularity in the entry-level SUV category.

Similarly, the Tata Nexon achieved 19,810 units, continuing its strong performance among urban SUV buyers.

Together, both Tata models reinforced their position as preferred choices for those seeking compact SUVs.

Moving ahead, the Hyundai Creta ranked fourth with 17,838 units, remaining one of the most in-demand midsize SUVs in the country.

At the same time, Maruti Ertiga added 17,072 units, while the Maruti WagonR followed closely with 17,025 units, showing consistent performance in family and budget segments.

Furthermore, Maruti Baleno secured seventh place with 16,392 units, strengthening Maruti’s position in the premium hatchback space.

In addition, the Maruti Brezza posted 16,130 units, continuing its steady demand in the SUV segment.

Alongside it, the Maruti Fronx maintained momentum with 15,540 units, appealing to buyers looking for a sporty design.

Finally, the Mahindra Scorpio closed the top 10 list with 14,578 units, reflecting sustained interest in rugged SUVs.

Market Shows Balance Between Cars and SUVs Despite SUV Dominance

Overall, the rankings demonstrate a balance between traditional cars and utility vehicles, even though SUVs still dominate overall preferences.

Notably, the Dzire’s return to the top spot indicates that compact sedans continue to enjoy a loyal customer base.

Another key observation is Maruti Suzuki’s strong presence across multiple categories, with several models appearing in the top 10.

Altogether, sales of the top 10 vehicles reached 1,76,586 units in March 2026, signaling strong market demand at the end of the financial year.

Ultimately, while SUVs continue shaping market trends, the Dzire stood out by surpassing several popular SUVs to reclaim the number one position.
