Maharashtra is planning a major boost to its logistics infrastructure with a proposed 700-kilometre dedicated rail freight corridor connecting the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the upcoming Vadhvan Port to the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway. The project aims to strengthen the state’s position as a logistics and manufacturing hub while significantly reducing transportation costs for industries.

The proposal was announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during a recent event in Pune, where he outlined the state’s vision of integrating road, rail, and port infrastructure to support economic growth.

Dedicated Rail Network To Transform Freight Movement

According to the proposal, the freight corridor will utilise land already reserved for railway infrastructure along the 701-km Samruddhi Expressway. The rail line is expected to connect key logistics centres across Maharashtra, creating a seamless transportation network between ports and inland industrial regions.

The corridor will begin from JNPA and the under-construction Vadhvan Port before extending through important logistics hubs such as Jalna, Wardha, and Gadchiroli. By creating a dedicated freight route, the government hopes to reduce congestion on existing railway lines while improving cargo movement efficiency.

Lower Logistics Costs For Industries

One of the primary objectives of the project is to reduce logistics costs, which remain a major challenge for Indian manufacturers. Dedicated freight infrastructure can help industries transport goods faster and more reliably, improving competitiveness in domestic and international markets.

State officials believe the corridor will support export-oriented businesses by providing direct connectivity between production centres and major ports. This could particularly benefit industries located along the Samruddhi Expressway corridor, which has already emerged as a key economic growth zone in Maharashtra.

Vadhvan Port Set To Play A Major Role

The proposed rail corridor is closely linked to the development of Vadhvan Port in Palghar district. Once completed, the port is expected to become one of India’s largest maritime gateways and significantly expand the state’s cargo handling capacity.

Improved rail connectivity between Vadhvan Port, JNPA, and industrial centres across Maharashtra is expected to strengthen supply chains and support the state’s ambitions of becoming a global logistics hub.

Building An Integrated Infrastructure Ecosystem

The rail freight corridor is part of a broader strategy to create an integrated infrastructure ecosystem around the Samruddhi Expressway. The state government has been exploring multiple connectivity projects, including freight roads, logistics parks, and industrial clusters that can leverage the expressway’s strategic location.

If implemented, the proposed corridor could reshape freight transportation across Maharashtra and create new opportunities for manufacturing, exports, warehousing, and logistics investments.
