The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a firm stand against the misuse of FASTags by vehicle owners who do not affix them to their windshields. Known as “loose FASTags” or “tag-in-hand,” these improperly used tags are now under scrutiny and can be blacklisted. The move aims to improve the efficiency and integrity of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system.

Why Has NHAI Strengthened This Policy?
The NHAI’s decision is rooted in its ongoing efforts to enhance tolling operations, especially ahead of the rollout of new systems like the Annual Pass and Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling. Loose FASTags have been linked to false chargebacks, misuse in closed-loop systems, and unnecessary lane congestion. By tightening this policy, NHAI seeks to ensure seamless and authentic toll operations, benefiting all National Highway users.
How Will Blacklisting Work?
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has outlined a clear mechanism for blacklisting. Toll Collection Agencies and Concessionaires have been instructed to report instances of loose FASTags using a dedicated email ID. Once reported, NHAI will take swift action to hotlist or blacklist the offending tags, effectively disabling their use.
What Does This Mean for Vehicle Owners?
For most vehicle owners who use FASTags properly, there will be no impact. However, for those who continue to use FASTags without attaching them to their windshields, there could be penalties and disruptions. The aim is not to punish but to bring uniformity and discipline to the ETC framework, which already has a penetration rate of over 98 percent across Indian highways.
Tips for Compliant FASTag Usage
To avoid any issues, users should:
- Affix FASTag Properly: Secure it on the windshield as instructed.
- Update KYC: Ensure your Know Your Customer details are up to date with the issuing bank or app.
- Maintain Sufficient Balance: Regularly check and recharge your FASTag wallet.
- Monitor Notifications: Pay attention to SMS or email alerts related to your FASTag activity.
By curbing the use of loose FASTags, NHAI is moving towards a more transparent and efficient tolling experience. This proactive measure will significantly reduce delays and ensure smoother commutes for millions of highway users across the country.
