Amid mounting criticism over increased metro fares, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is considering an innovative revenue stream by introducing cargo transportation services during non-peak hours. The initiative is inspired by Delhi Metro’s recent partnership with Blue Dart to facilitate urban freight movement.

Exploring Partnerships with Logistics Firms
A senior BMRCL official confirmed the plans, stating that discussions with logistics and e-commerce companies are on the horizon. Baiyappanahalli station has been identified as a potential hub for cargo operations. The primary goal is to enhance supply chain efficiency and alleviate urban issues like traffic congestion and pollution.
Decline in Ridership
Following the fare hike, BMRCL has experienced a significant dip in daily ridership, with a reported decline of nearly 1 lakh passengers per day. The new cargo initiative could provide a much-needed revenue boost.
Taking Inspiration from Delhi Metro
Delhi Metro has already implemented cargo transport using dedicated coaches for packages during off-peak hours. Bengaluru Metro aims to adopt a similar model, ensuring passenger comfort while maximizing asset utilization.
Additional Revenue Models
BMRCL is also pursuing other non-fare revenue streams. Recent tenders have been invited for semi-naming rights, co-branding at select metro stations, and in-station advertising. Additionally, metro trains are now available for wrap-around advertisements, generating further income.
Expert Insights
Transport expert M.N. Srihari welcomed the move, emphasizing that metros worldwide are increasingly leveraging unused capacity for additional revenue. However, he questioned the timing, suggesting that these strategies could have been implemented before the fare hike.
Srihari highlighted successful international examples like Madrid Metro’s freight pilot project, which significantly reduced road congestion. He believes Bengaluru Metro could achieve similar results by collaborating with logistics partners.
Future Prospects
As Bengaluru expands and e-commerce continues to grow, BMRCL’s proposal has the potential to offer a sustainable freight movement solution. The plan is expected to benefit not only the corporation’s finances but also the city’s overall traffic and pollution levels.
