Kia is preparing a major upgrade for its popular compact SUV, the next-generation Kia Sonet, which is expected to launch around 2027 with a new platform and advanced features, followed by a strong hybrid version later in the decade.

Kia Sonet Hybrid To Launch In 2027 With Advanced Safety Features

New Platform: Shift to Advanced K1 Architecture

One of the biggest changes will be the move from the current K2 platform to a new global K1 platform.

This upgrade will bring:

  • Support for over-the-air (OTA) updates
  • Remote diagnostics and connected tech upgrades
  • Improved structural rigidity and safety
  • Likely increase in wheelbase and cabin space

The new platform is already seen in newer Kia models and is expected to make the Sonet more future-ready and tech-focused.

Hybrid Engine in the Pipeline (But Not at Launch)

Kia is developing a strong hybrid powertrain for the Sonet, but it won’t be available immediately.

  • Hybrid expected around 2028–2029
  • Not part of the initial 2027 launch lineup

This hybrid setup could significantly improve:

  • Fuel efficiency (potentially 25–30 km/l range in future estimates)
  • Lower emissions
  • Better urban driving performance

Existing Engines Likely to Continue

At launch, the next-gen Sonet is expected to retain its current engine options:

  • 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol
  • 1.0L turbo petrol
  • 1.5L diesel

This ensures continuity and affordability, while the hybrid is introduced later as a premium option.

Bigger Upgrade Beyond Engine

The next-gen Sonet will not just be about powertrain changes—it’s expected to get a full overhaul:

  • Redesigned exterior and interiors
  • Larger infotainment screens (possibly 12.3-inch)
  • Upgraded ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems)
  • Better rear seat space (a known limitation in current model)

Why This Matters

The Sonet is one of India’s most competitive compact SUVs, and this update shows Kia’s strategy:

  • Move toward hybrid and electrified mobility
  • Add more tech and connected features
  • Stay competitive against rivals like Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, and Maruti Brezza

The hybrid addition, in particular, could be a game-changer in the sub-4m SUV segment.

Bigger Picture

This development reflects a broader industry trend:

  • Automakers are gradually introducing hybrid tech before full EV transition
  • Compact SUVs are becoming more tech-heavy and efficient
  • Platforms are evolving to support software-driven features
