As per latest reports, Japan is offering Permanent Residency (PR), which allows foreigners to live in Japan indefinitely, and Indians are eligible to apply.

Japan Is Offering Permanent Residency To Indians For Under Rs 5,000

Japan’s Permanent Residency is a visa status that permits a foreign national to reside in the country for as long as they want.

To be eligible for Japanese PR, you must have lived in Japan for at least 10 years.

General eligibility criteria include:

  • Living in Japan for a minimum of 10 years.
  • Having sufficient financial means.
  • No criminal record or violations of immigration laws.

If you are married to a Japanese national or permanent resident for over three years and have lived in Japan for at least one year, you can apply for PR.

Children of Japanese nationals or permanent residents are eligible for PR after one year of residence.

Japan uses a points-based system for highly skilled professionals. Applicants with 70 points can apply after three years of continuous residency. Applicants with 80 points or more can apply after just one year.

Criteria and Steps For Application

Documents required for PR application include:

  • Application form for Permanent Residence.
  • Valid passport and residence card.
  • Certificate of Residence, proof of employment/income, and recent bank statements.
  • Tax payment certificates and proof of social security contributions.
  • Documents from a guarantor (letter of guarantee and proof of their income/status).
  • Marriage or family registration documents, if applicable.

All documents must either be in Japanese or accompanied by translations.

The steps to apply are:

  1. Gather all required documents.
  2. Submit the application to the local Immigration Bureau before your current visa expires.
  3. Pay the application fee of 8,000 Japanese Yen (approximately ₹4,789) via revenue stamps.
  4. Wait for processing, which usually takes 4–8 months (time may vary).
  5. Once approved, exchange your current residence card for a new one at the local municipal or ward office.

To maintain PR status, you must be physically present in Japan for more than six months during each 12-month period before and during the application.
