Apple is set to release the highly anticipated iOS 17.2 update, introducing a range of features such as the Journal app, collaborative Apple Music playlists, an action button Translate feature, FaceTime warnings for blocked contacts, Messages app sticker reactions, spatial video recording support, Apple Music listening history, Siri ETA, and more.
Currently available in its fourth beta for beta testers, a standout feature generating significant discussion is the ability to change default notification sounds and haptics.
Anticipating the Debut: Journal App and Key Features in the Upcoming iOS 17.2 Update
Within the Sounds & Haptics settings, iOS 17.2 Beta 4 unveils the option for users to personalize Default Alert sounds. A new “Default Alerts” setting enables users to choose the sound for all incoming notifications, excluding texts, mail alerts, and calendar alerts, which already had customization options. Users can now select any of the text tones as the default notification sound. Additionally, there is a choice to modify the default haptic feedback, providing users the option to revert to the original haptic alert introduced with iOS 17 or personalize it according to their preferences.
This update is notable as Apple had not previously provided a way for users to alter default notification sounds and haptic feedback. While recognizing the importance of this feature, it is acknowledged that such customization options seem overdue for iPhones, and the celebration should be tempered considering its fundamental nature.
Anticipated Feature: Debut of Journal App in iOS 17.2 Update
Among the highly anticipated updates is the introduction of the Journal app, first showcased by Apple at WWDC in June. Described as an “all-new way to appreciate life’s moments and preserve memories,” the Journal app will debut with the iOS 17.2 update. However, its initial availability will be limited to iPhones, with no information on potential expansion to iPads and Mac or compatibility with the Apple Watch.
With iOS 17.2 currently in its fourth beta phase, the update is expected to be rolled out soon, possibly by the end of 2023. Last year, iOS 16.2 was released around a similar timeline on December 16, 2022. The Journal app, among other features, is poised to be a highlight of the iOS 17.2 update.
