On 17 september, Meta announced the introduction of Instagram Teen Accounts which is designed to offer a new experience for teens, guided by parents.
Instagram Launching Teen Accounts
Basically these Teen Accounts come with built-in protections as they have the ability to limit who can contact them and the content they see.
This is an interesting way to provide new ways for teens to explore their interests.
The platform will automatically place teens into Teen Accounts.
It is noteworthy here that the teens under 16 will need a parent’s permission to change any of these settings to be less strict.
Reimagining Teen’s Experiences
It appears that the social media wants to feel confident that their teens can use social media to connect with their friends and explore their interests.
The good part is that they don’t even have to worry about unsafe or inappropriate experiences.
On this subject, Meta said in a post that we understand parents’ concerns, and that’s why we’re reimagining our apps for teens with new Teen Accounts.
The social media platform has designed this new experience to better support parents, so that they will have peace of mind that their teens are safe with the right protections in place.
Besides the safety, the teens will also get access to new features which are especially designed just for them.
This feature allows them to select topics they want to see more of in Explore and their recommendations so they can focus on the fun, positive content they love.
No More Safety Concerns
Instagram claims to have developed Teen Accounts with parents and teens in mind.
As per this new Teen Account protections, the platform is designed to address parents’ biggest concerns, including who their teens are talking to online, the content they’re seeing and whether their time is being well spent.
The best part is that these protections are turned on automatically and parents decide if teens under 16 can change any of these settings to be less strict.
Most sensitive Content Control
Further, the teens will automatically be placed into the most restrictive setting of the Instagram sensitive content control, which limits the type of sensitive content (such as content that shows people fighting or promotes cosmetic procedures) teens see in places like Explore and Reels.
Assuring Limited Interactions
Under this facility, teens can only be tagged or mentioned by people they follow.
This would also automatically turn on the most restrictive version of the anti-bullying feature which is Hidden Words.
With this feature, offensive words and phrases will be filtered out of teens’ comments and DM requests.
