Infosys founder Narayana Murthy has raised concerns over the overuse and misrepresentation of artificial intelligence (AI) in India, calling many so-called AI applications “silly old programs.” Speaking at TiE Con Mumbai 2025, Murthy highlighted how AI has become a buzzword in India, with even basic programs being labeled as AI to align with industry trends.

Infosys Founder Dismisses AI Hype In India As "Silly, Old Programmes"

Murthy Explains AI Fundamentals

While debunking the AI hype, Murthy also explained the fundamental principles of artificial intelligence, particularly:

  • Machine Learning (ML): A large-scale correlation tool that predicts outcomes using vast datasets, primarily handling supervised algorithms.
  • Deep Learning (DL): Mimics the human brain by analyzing unsupervised data to generate new conditions and insights, making it more powerful for tasks that require human-like cognition.

He emphasized that true AI involves deep learning and neural networks, which have the potential to replicate human behavior effectively—unlike the “ordinary” programs currently being marketed as AI in India.

AI and Job Impact: A Balanced Perspective

Addressing concerns about AI replacing jobs, Murthy acknowledged that every technological advancement results in job losses in certain sectors but also creates new opportunities if implemented wisely. He cited examples of how AI, when used in autonomous vehicles, healthcare, and transportation, can drive industry expansion and generate employment.

Conclusion

Murthy’s critique serves as a reality check for India’s AI industry, urging businesses to move beyond superficial AI applications and focus on true innovation. His remarks also underscore the importance of using AI responsibly to enhance economic growth and job creation rather than just following trends.
