India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is making its much-awaited entry into the long-haul segment with the launch of two non-stop European routes from Mumbai—Manchester and Amsterdam. The Mumbai-Manchester flight, launching July 1, 2025, will be the only direct service between the two cities, while the Mumbai-Amsterdam route will follow on July 2, 2025.

A Big Leap For IndiGo
This expansion is a milestone in IndiGo’s global journey. The Gurugram-based carrier will operate these routes thrice weekly using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. This also makes IndiGo the only airline to provide direct connectivity between India and Northern UK, enhancing mobility for students, professionals, and the Indian diaspora.
Upgraded In-Flight Experience
IndiGo is stepping up its onboard experience for international travelers. On these routes:
- All passengers will get complimentary hot meals, with vegetarian options by default and the ability to pre-book non-veg meals.
- IndiGoStretch customers will enjoy complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
- Economy passengers will receive complimentary meals and soft drinks, while alcohol will be available for purchase.
However, IndiGo has clarified that there are no plans to introduce hot meals on domestic flights.
Strengthening Global Ties
CEO Pieter Elbers stated that these flights are not just about expansion but about connecting India more deeply with global markets. The new routes are expected to:
- Boost tourism and trade between India and Europe.
- Support the Indian diaspora in the UK and Netherlands.
- Unlock new opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
Manchester Airport’s Managing Director, Chris Woodroofe, called it a game-changer, linking the North of England to India’s booming economy. The route also arrives during a high point in India-UK relations, with a new Indian consulate in Manchester and key partnerships underway.
More Dreamliners, Bigger Plans
To support these international ambitions, IndiGo has signed a damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways for six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. One aircraft is already operating on the Delhi-Bangkok route. These jets will enable IndiGo’s European foray until the delivery of its own A321XLR and A350-900 aircraft, expected in 2024 and 2027 respectively.
IndiGo’s long-haul debut marks a new chapter in Indian aviation, as it transitions from a leading domestic player to a serious global contender.
