IndiGo, working alongside Digi Yatra Foundation, Bangalore International Airport Limited, and International Air Transport Association, has completed technical trials of a contactless international travel system at Kempegowda International Airport.

These trials showcased a fully connected digital journey, starting from ticket booking to airport processing using biometric verification.

IndiGo and Partners Successfully Test Seamless Biometric-Based International Travel System

At the same time, this initiative is part of IATA’s global Proof-of-Concept programme, which aims to enable seamless, contactless international travel across major aviation markets.

Building on earlier efforts, IndiGo and Digi Yatra had already introduced a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI)-based system for domestic travel.

Now, the recent trials confirm that such biometric identity systems can be scaled effectively for international use.

As a result, this marks an important step toward broader adoption of digital identity solutions in global aviation.

The system allows passengers to securely share credentials through an app, while facial recognition is used for identity checks across airport checkpoints.

Consequently, the need for physical documents is significantly reduced, making the process faster and more efficient.

Moreover, the framework aligns with IATA’s One ID initiative, which focuses on creating a global standard for digital identity in air travel.

IndiGo Highlights Scalable Biometric Travel Breakthrough for Global Adoption

Highlighting the achievement, Neetan Chopra of IndiGo stated, “These successful technical trials clearly demonstrate the feasibility and scalability of leveraging digital identity and biometric technologies to deliver seamless, contactless airport experience.”

He further added that the collaboration helps move the concept toward real-world application and future global adoption.

Similarly, Kim Macaulay from IATA remarked, “This proof-of-concept demonstrates how digital identity frameworks can extend beyond domestic travel to enable seamless international journeys aligned with global standards.”

She also emphasized that the success strengthens India’s position in transforming passenger experiences worldwide.

From an infrastructure perspective, George Fanthome of BIAL noted that the trials support a vision of large-scale biometric travel backed by interoperable systems and user-controlled data.

In addition, Suresh Khadakbhavi of Digi Yatra highlighted that the system ensures a secure and privacy-focused travel experience with smooth identity verification.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru Airport, already an early adopter of Digi Yatra for domestic flights, is now expanding these capabilities to international passengers.

Ultimately, these trials place the airport among a select group of global hubs participating in IATA-led efforts to develop next-generation passenger processing systems.
