India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has introduced a new budget-friendly fare category called IndiGo Lite, aimed at passengers who travel with only cabin baggage and do not require checked-in luggage. The move reflects a growing trend in the aviation industry towards unbundled pricing, where travellers pay only for the services they actually use.

The new fare option is expected to appeal to business travellers, weekend flyers, and passengers taking short trips who prefer travelling light and saving money on ticket costs.

What Is IndiGo Lite?

IndiGo Lite is the airline’s new entry-level Economy Class fare. Under this category, passengers are allowed to carry only one cabin bag weighing up to 7 kg and do not receive any complimentary checked-in baggage allowance. In return, travellers benefit from a lower ticket price compared to regular economy fares.

Passengers booking the Lite fare will receive an auto-assigned seat at no additional charge. However, services such as checked baggage, preferred seat selection, meals, and priority services can still be purchased separately if required.

When Does It Become Available?

The new fare became available for booking on July 1, 2026, and will be applicable for travel starting July 15, 2026. IndiGo has stated that the fare can be booked exclusively through its direct channels, including the airline’s website, mobile application, and contact centre.

The Lite fare is available on direct domestic and international non-stop flights, including one-way, round-trip, and multi-city itineraries.

Why IndiGo Introduced the New Fare

Airlines worldwide have increasingly adopted unbundled fare structures to give customers greater flexibility while making base fares more affordable. IndiGo says the new offering is designed for customers who travel light and prefer paying only for the services they need.

The launch comes shortly after rival Air India introduced a basic economy fare that excludes complimentary meals, signalling a broader shift towards personalised pricing in India’s aviation sector.

How Much Can Passengers Save?

While IndiGo has not officially disclosed the exact savings across all routes, industry observers estimate that Lite fares could reduce ticket prices by a few hundred rupees on domestic routes. Some early comparisons indicate discounts of around ₹150-₹400 depending on the sector and travel date.

For travellers who rarely check in baggage, the new fare could offer meaningful savings without sacrificing the core flying experience.

A New Era of Customised Air Travel

The introduction of IndiGo Lite highlights the airline industry’s move towards greater fare flexibility and customer choice. By separating baggage and ancillary services from the base ticket price, airlines can offer lower entry-level fares while allowing passengers to customise their travel experience.

As competition intensifies in India’s aviation market, similar fare innovations are likely to become increasingly common, giving travellers more options to balance convenience and cost.
