Ahmedabad is gearing up for one of the most transformative transport projects in India — a 16-storey vertical railway station, the first of its kind in the country. Designed as a fully integrated multimodal transit hub, the redevelopment aims to bring conventional rail, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train, metro connectivity, buses and road transport under one towering urban structure. With rising footfall and limited horizontal space, Indian Railways is adopting a global urban approach: building upward.

A First-of-Its-Kind Vertical Transit Hub
The landmark structure will rise above platforms 10, 11 and 12 of the existing Kalupur Railway Station. Unlike traditional low-rise stations, this hub will use vertical architecture to accommodate passenger amenities. The 16 floors are expected to include:
- Passenger concourses
- Waiting lounges
- Ticketing and retail zones
- Food courts
- Office spaces
- Seamless intermodal corridors
This format mirrors advanced transit centres in Tokyo, Hong Kong and New York, pushing Indian station design into a new era.
Seamless Multimodal Connectivity
The biggest highlight is integration. The station is being designed to connect directly with the Kalupur Metro Station, enabling smooth transfers between:
- Metro
- Bullet train
- Long-distance trains
- Local trains
- Buses and other road transport
Wider approach roads, elevated walkways and redesigned bus bays aim to reduce last-mile delays and help travellers switch modes without friction.
A Key Terminal for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train
The vertical hub will be a major node on India’s first high-speed rail corridor. Once operational, the bullet train will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad from 7–8 hours to just 2 hours. The new station will feature dedicated bullet train concourses linked to metro and traditional rail platforms, enabling fast, efficient transfers.
What Travellers Can Expect
The station promises an airport-like experience with:
- Modern navigation and signage
- Spacious concourses
- Upgraded waiting lounges
- Smooth entry/exit systems
- Better crowd management
- Integrated commercial spaces
- Ample parking and structured pickup/drop zones
Designed for efficiency and comfort, the project aims to reduce congestion and improve overall passenger experience.
Completion Timeline
The multimodal station is expected to be ready by July 2027. Once complete, it will significantly boost Ahmedabad’s connectivity, support the bullet train rollout, and set the blueprint for similar hubs in other major Indian cities.
