India’s gig internet workforce is expected to grow nearly threefold by the end of the decade, increasing from more than 6 million monthly active workers today to 17–21 million by 2030, according to a report by Redseer Strategy Consultants.
The report, titled Gig Internet Workforce in India: Bridge to ~20 Million Livelihoods, highlights how app-based platforms across food delivery, ride-hailing, and home services are becoming an increasingly important source of employment and income generation in the country.
Gig Platforms Creating New Employment Opportunities
One of the report’s most significant findings is that 54% of surveyed gig workers had no paid employment before joining gig platforms, indicating that the sector is helping many people enter the workforce for the first time.
Looking ahead, more than 30% of the projected gig workforce by 2030 is expected to comprise first-time entrants into the labour market. This reflects the growing role of digital platforms in creating flexible livelihood opportunities for young workers and individuals seeking additional income.
Higher Earnings And Flexible Work Attract Workers
The study found that full-time gig workers earn up to 2.5 times higher monthly net income compared to similar formal and informal occupations.
Flexibility remains another major attraction. According to the report, more than 90% of monthly active gig workers choose part-time participation, allowing them to balance work with education, family responsibilities, or other employment.
Additionally, nearly 70% of surveyed workers believe their experience on gig platforms improves their future earning opportunities by helping them build practical skills and work experience.
Women Could Drive The Next Phase Of Growth
The report identifies greater participation by women as one of the biggest opportunities for expanding India’s gig economy. Increasing female participation could significantly boost workforce numbers while improving financial inclusion and employment opportunities across the country.
Industry experts believe digital platforms can offer women more flexible work arrangements, making it easier to participate in income-generating activities.
