In a landmark moment for Indian infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 6, 2025, inaugurated the all-new Pamban Bridge, the nation’s first vertical-lift railway sea bridge, spanning 2.08 kilometers across the Palk Strait. This high-tech marvel links the pilgrimage town of Rameswaram with the mainland and replaces the iconic 110-year-old bridge decommissioned in 2022.

Built for the Future, Honoring the Past
Constructed at a cost of ₹550 crore, the new bridge showcases Indian engineering excellence with 99 spans, 333 foundation piles, and corrosion-resistant technology, including stainless steel reinforcements and polysiloxane coating. The dual-track structure supports semi-high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat and freight movement, future-proofing the rail corridor.
PM Modi also flagged off the Rameswaram–Tambaram Express and a Coast Guard vessel during the inauguration.
Vertical Lift Mechanism for Seamless Marine Traffic
A standout feature is its 72.5-metre central span that can rise 17 metres vertically, allowing large vessels to pass—a significant upgrade from the older bridge. Smaller boats can now pass even without lifting, thanks to the structure being three metres taller than its predecessor.
Cultural & Economic Significance
During his visit, PM Modi is also scheduled to offer prayers at Ramanathaswamy Temple and inaugurate rail and road projects worth ₹8,300 crore aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic growth across Tamil Nadu.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called it a tribute to Tamil heritage, combining tradition with cutting-edge tech.
Why It Matters
The new Pamban Bridge is more than just infrastructure—it’s a symbol of progress and heritage. It’s poised to boost tourism, facilitate faster travel, and promote regional trade, reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s place on India’s developmental map.
