The Indian Railways is set for a major expansion, with the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approving four multitracking projects worth ₹18,658 crore. Spread across 15 districts in Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, these projects aim to improve connectivity, increase freight capacity, and support regional development under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.

Expanding the Network

The four projects will add approximately 1,247 km of new tracks, including:

  • 3rd and 4th lines between Sambalpur and Jarapda (Odisha)
  • 3rd and 4th lines between Jharsuguda and Sason (Odisha)
  • 5th and 6th lines on the Kharsia–Naya Raipur–Parmalkasa section (Chhattisgarh)
  • Doubling of the Gondia–Balharshah line (Maharashtra)

These upgrades will significantly enhance capacity on key freight and passenger routes.

Connectivity to Aspirational Districts

Two aspirational districts—Gadchiroli in Maharashtra and Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh—will see improved access. The projects include 19 new stations, benefitting around 3,350 villages and nearly 4.72 million people. Notably, the Kharsia–Naya Raipur–Parmalkasa section will connect new areas like Baloda Bazar, fostering industrial development, particularly cement and mineral-based industries.

Freight Traffic Surge & Economic Growth

These projects are expected to generate an additional 88.77 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) of freight traffic. The upgraded lines are critical for transporting agricultural goods, coal, iron ore, fertilizers, steel, limestone, and cement, bolstering both local and national supply chains.

Green Goals & Cost Savings

In line with India’s climate commitments, the multitracking efforts are projected to:

  • Reduce oil imports by 95 crore litres
  • Cut carbon dioxide emissions by 477 crore kg
  • Achieve an environmental impact equivalent to planting 190 million trees

Additionally, enhanced logistics efficiency is expected to reduce overall transportation costs, making Indian exports more competitive.

Conclusion

These multitracking projects are not just infrastructure upgrades—they represent a strategic push for integrated development, environmental sustainability, and industrial expansion. With enhanced connectivity and capacity, Indian Railways is poised to become a major engine for regional and national growth.
