Starting August 2024, significant changes are coming to the Garib Rath trains, a popular low-cost travel option in India. The Indian Railways has announced the cessation of reservations for AC Chair Car and Second AC coaches, signaling a major upgrade initiative.
Background of Garib Rath Trains
Garib Rath trains were introduced in 2006 under the tenure of former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. These trains have been offering affordable air-conditioned travel across 52 routes on a weekly or multiple-times-per-week basis. Their fares are significantly lower compared to regular AC Third and chair car coaches, making them a popular choice for budget travelers.
Upgrade Initiative
The Indian Railways has decided to retrofit the aging Garib Rath coaches, which have been in service for 18 years. The initiative involves replacing the old coaches with modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches and newly designed economy AC coaches. This upgrade aims to provide an enhanced travel experience and improved safety features.
New Economy AC Coaches
The new economy AC coaches will offer several improved amenities:
- Increased Berths: Each coach will have 81 berths, up from the current 72.
- Enhanced Safety: Berths will be made from fireproof materials.
- Convenience Features: Foldable snack tables, modern toilets, reading lights, and USB charging points will be available for passengers.
These changes are designed to offer a more comfortable and convenient journey for travelers on Garib Rath trains.
Impact on Bookings
As part of the phased upgrade process, starting August 2024, reservations for AC Chair Car and Second AC coaches will be discontinued. Passengers will only have the option to book Third AC coaches on Garib Rath trains. This transition period is crucial for travelers to plan their bookings accordingly.
Production and Implementation
The production of these new economy AC coaches is underway at multiple locations, including Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, and Modern Coach Factory in Raebareli. The implementation of these changes will be gradual, ensuring minimal disruption to existing travel plans.
Advisory for Travelers
Travelers are advised to plan their bookings in advance, considering the upcoming changes. The option to reserve Second AC and chair car seats on Garib Rath trains will be phased out over the coming months, so passengers should be prepared for this transition.
