India’s passport ranking has significantly improved in 2023, climbing to the 80th spot from its previous position of 87 in 2022. This advancement allows Indian passport holders visa-free access to as many as 57 countries, according to the Henley Passport Index report.
Singapore has now taken the top spot for having the world’s most powerful passport, surpassing Japan. Singaporean passport holders can enjoy visa-free entry to an impressive 192 global destinations.
India Ranks 80th In The Global Passport Index, Was Previously 87th
At the 80th position, India shares the ranking with two other countries, Senegal, and Togo, all offering similar visa-free access to various nations.
In the second place, Germany, Italy, and Spain have moved up, granting their passport holders visa-free access to 190 destinations. Japanese passport holders, along with those from six other nations – Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, South Korea, and Sweden, occupy the third position with access to 189 destinations without requiring a prior visa.
The Henley Passport Index determines rankings based on the number of destinations that passport holders can access without a visa. The index relies heavily on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Pakistan Holds Fourth Worst Passport Ranking
In contrast to India’s improved ranking, its neighboring country Pakistan holds the fourth worst passport globally. Pakistani passport holders have visa-free access to only 33 countries.
At the very bottom of the Henley Openness Index, four countries receive a score of zero, meaning their passports permit no visa-free access to any destination. These countries are Afghanistan, North Korea, Papua New Guinea, and Turkmenistan.
The Henley Passport Index provides valuable insights into the strength of passports from different countries and highlights the level of global mobility each passport allows its holders. As India’s passport ranking continues to improve, it enhances the travel possibilities and opportunities for its citizens on an international scale. Meanwhile, countries with lower rankings face more significant restrictions and limitations on their citizens’ travel freedom.
