The Indian government is engaging with social media platform X regarding concerns over its AI chatbot, Grok, using Hindi slang and abusive language. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is investigating the issue but has not yet issued any formal notice to X. Officials are examining whether Grok’s responses violate Indian laws and determining the legal provisions under which action may be taken.

Indian Govt Is Investigating Hindi Slang Usage By Elon Musk's Grok AI

AI Controversy: MeitY Probes Grok’s Use of Hindi Slang and Abusive Language

The controversy arose when an X user asked Grok to list the “10 best mutuals.” Following a brief silence, the user posted critical remarks, prompting Grok to respond in an informal yet offensive manner. The chatbot’s unfiltered use of slang and invective surprised users, sparking debates on social media about AI regulation and responsible usage.

MeitY sources indicated that not only should the chatbot be scrutinized, but action should also be taken against individuals instigating such AI-generated responses. The ministry is in discussions with X to understand how Grok functions and at what point its responses may contravene Indian regulations.

Government Scrutiny on Grok Sparks Debate on AI Ethics and Regulation

When asked about the situation, Grok itself confirmed that the Indian government was scrutinizing its operations. The chatbot acknowledged that MeitY was investigating concerns about its behaviour but clarified that no formal ban or legal action had been confirmed as of March 20, 2025. Instead, the government is engaging with X to assess potential violations and determine appropriate measures.

This incident has reignited discussions on AI governance, ethics, and the need for regulatory frameworks to manage AI-generated content. As AI tools become more integrated into daily life, ensuring that they adhere to cultural and legal sensitivities remains a key challenge for policymakers and technology companies alike.
