In a major overhaul of its domestic mail services, India Post will merge Registered Post with Speed Post starting September 1, 2025. The move is aimed at streamlining mail delivery, reducing overlaps, cutting operational costs, and ensuring faster and more reliable services for customers across India.

India Post Big Update: Registered Post To Be Merged With Speed Post

Why the Merger?

The merger is expected to:

  • Eliminate service overlap between registered and speed post
  • Reduce delivery costs
  • Simplify operations for postal staff
  • Offer faster delivery with better tracking

The decision comes at a time when India Post is focusing on digitization, modernization, and building integrated mail centres to handle rising mail volumes efficiently.

What Changes for Users?

From September 1, all domestic secure or urgent mail will have to be sent via Speed Post. Services like proof of delivery and delivery to a specific addressee, which were key features of Registered Post, will continue to be offered as value-added options under Speed Post.

For now, the pricing for the merged service is still being finalized. Customers can expect a unified and simplified booking experience, along with more robust tracking features already offered by Speed Post.

Transition Timeline

  • Till August 31: Both Registered Post and Speed Post services will operate as usual.
  • From September 1: All new secure mail must be booked as Speed Post.

Currently, Speed Post delivery timelines vary:

  • 1 day for local deliveries
  • Up to 5 days for longer-distance consignments

User Reactions and Postal Enhancements

Consumer rights groups have welcomed the move, citing improved efficiency and faster services. However, they have also urged India Post to avoid passing additional operational costs to users, especially in rural areas where postal services remain critical.

Meanwhile, the Postal Department is upgrading infrastructure, including the development of larger integrated mail centres and advanced digital tools for better mail management.
