IndiGo Airlines, India’s largest carrier, is re-establishing direct connectivity between India and mainland China after a hiatus of more than five years. Starting October 26, the airline will operate a daily non-stop flight between Kolkata and Guangzhou. A second route — Delhi to Guangzhou — is set to commence on November 10, further strengthening connectivity between the two nations.

AAI Celebrates the Revival of International Connectivity
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) hailed the development as a “milestone for India’s growing aviation network.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), AAI highlighted that the revival of this route marks a “renewed chapter in international air travel”, opening up new opportunities for trade, tourism, and economic cooperation between India and China.
Why This Flight Matters
Direct flights between India and China were suspended in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and later delays occurred amid diplomatic and regulatory complexities. The resumption signifies a positive step toward normalization of travel and business relations.
Guangzhou, a major commercial hub in southern China, attracts Indian business travelers, traders, and students, while Kolkata and Delhi serve as key gateways for eastern and northern India.
Strengthening Trade and Tourism Ties
The new routes are expected to boost bilateral trade, ease logistics for exporters, and encourage tourism between the two countries. India and China share strong business linkages in sectors like electronics, pharmaceuticals, and textiles — and improved connectivity could further enhance collaboration.
