The Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on August 12, 2024, officially released the rankings for 2024 which were compiled by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
NIRF Introduces New Categories in Latest Higher Education Rankings Announced in New Delhi
This notable announcement was done at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi where other notable personalities like the Minister of State for Education, Sukanto Majumdar, and other dignitaries also in attendance. The latest ranking is present on the NIRF’s official website, nirfindia.org, which covers 16 distinct categories.
3 new categories have been introduced in this year which includes: State Universities, Skill Universities, and Open Universities. These new categories bring fresh focus areas to the rankings, highlighting the evolving landscape of higher education in India.
The other established categories include universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation.
The NIRF rankings methodology is crafted by a Core Committee established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). It is on various parameters that the evaluation is done, these include: teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and institutional perception.
IIT Madras Tops Overall NIRF Rankings for 6th Consecutive Year; Leading Institutions in Engineering, Medical, and New Categories Revealed
It is the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras that secured top spot for the 6th consecutive year in the overall category. This Institute was followed by with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and IIT Bombay in 2nd and 3rd position respectively.
Leading the pack in the engineering category is the IIT Madras, which is followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay.
In the medical sector, AIIMS Delhi has achieved the highest ranking, with PGIMER Chandigarh and Christian Medical College Vellore following in second and third places respectively.
