The Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has revealed fresh details about the much-anticipated metro corridor linking Millennium City Centre to Cyber Hub. The system will be capable of speeds up to 90 kmph, with trains available every five minutes during peak hours, ensuring faster and more efficient travel across the city’s major commercial hubs.
Three-Coach Trains Initially, Expandable to Six
In its first phase, the Gurugram Metro will operate three-coach trains with a total capacity of 975 passengers. As ridership rises, these will be upgraded to six-coach formations, carrying up to 2,004 passengers.
A senior GMRL official confirmed that 26 trains—comprising 78 stainless-steel coaches—will be procured initially. Each coach will measure 3.9 metres in height and 2.9 metres in width, meeting international safety and design standards.
Depot Cost Triples Due to Expansion
The cost estimate for the upcoming metro depot near Marble Market in Sector 33 has risen sharply—from ₹110 crore to ₹332 crore. The depot’s planned area has been expanded from 5.5 hectares to 22.86 hectares, and its internal track length from 6 km to 18 km, to accommodate increased operational capacity and maintenance needs.
Underground Metro Proposal Faces Delay Concerns
Discussions are also ongoing about introducing an underground metro line in Old Gurugram as part of Phase 2. However, GMRL officials cautioned that such a move could delay the second phase by up to 18 months, as it would require fresh route surveys, environmental assessments, and geotechnical studies.
“While the underground option could resolve several urban issues, it would also raise project costs considerably,” said a senior official on condition of anonymity.
