Centre Launches Biggest LIC Stake Sale Since Listing

The Central Government has announced plans to sell up to 6.5% stake in Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) through an Offer for Sale (OFS). If the entire offer is subscribed, the government is expected to raise around ₹31,000 crore, making it one of the biggest stake sales in India’s capital markets.

The OFS will begin with a base offer of 2.5% equity, along with a greenshoe option of another 4%, allowing the government to increase the offer size if investor demand remains strong.

Offer Size Valued At Around ₹35,000 Crore

At current market prices, the proposed 6.5% stake is valued at nearly ₹35,000 crore. The government has chosen the OFS route to dilute its holding while increasing public participation in India’s largest life insurer.

The move comes more than four years after LIC’s historic stock market listing and is expected to significantly improve the company’s public shareholding.

Helping LIC Meet Public Shareholding Norms

One of the primary objectives of the stake sale is to help LIC comply with the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) minimum public shareholding requirement.

Increasing the public float is expected to improve liquidity in LIC shares, attract greater institutional participation, and enhance trading volumes in the stock.

Boost To Government’s Disinvestment Programme

The proposed stake sale also supports the government’s broader disinvestment strategy aimed at raising funds through equity dilution in public sector enterprises.

The proceeds generated from the OFS are expected to contribute significantly towards the government’s resource mobilisation plans while maintaining its majority ownership in LIC.

Market experts believe the transaction will be closely watched by both domestic and global investors given LIC’s size and importance in India’s financial sector.

One Of India’s Largest Equity Offerings

If the greenshoe option is fully exercised, the LIC OFS could become one of the largest secondary share sales undertaken by the government. Strong investor participation would not only help achieve the fundraising target but also strengthen LIC’s position in the capital markets by expanding its shareholder base.

Summary

The Central Government plans to sell up to a 6.5% stake in LIC through an Offer for Sale, with a base offer of 2.5% and a 4% greenshoe option. The sale could raise around ₹31,000 crore, while the stake is valued at nearly ₹35,000 crore. The move will help increase LIC’s public shareholding, improve stock liquidity, and support the government’s broader disinvestment programme.
