In a significant move aimed at empowering drivers, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the launch of ‘Sahkar Taxi,’ a cooperative-based ride-hailing service. This initiative will allow drivers to retain their earnings without intermediaries, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ vision.

Direct Profit for Drivers

Unlike existing ride-hailing platforms like Ola and Uber, Sahkar Taxi will operate through cooperative societies. By eliminating middlemen, drivers will receive the full share of their earnings. This model ensures financial stability for drivers, encouraging more participation and enhancing livelihood opportunities.

Aligning with the ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ Vision

The initiative is a reflection of the government’s commitment to cooperative growth. According to Shah, the Ministry of Cooperation has dedicated three and a half years to developing this initiative. Sahkar Taxi aims to create an equitable ride-hailing ecosystem, providing drivers with control over their income and working conditions.

Addressing Allegations Against Ola and Uber

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over Ola and Uber’s alleged discriminatory pricing. Recent reports accused the platforms of charging different fares based on whether users booked rides using an iPhone or an Android device. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued notices to both companies, questioning their pricing strategies.

While Ola and Uber have denied any platform-based price discrimination, the controversy has raised broader concerns about consumer rights and fair trade practices. Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has announced further investigations into pricing policies across food delivery and online ticketing sectors.

A Transparent and Equitable System

Sahkar Taxi promises to offer a transparent pricing model, giving consumers a fair alternative. Cooperative societies managing the service will ensure competitive pricing without discriminatory practices. Drivers, too, will benefit from reduced operational costs and greater financial independence.

Conclusion

With Sahkar Taxi, the government aims to disrupt the monopolistic hold of major ride-hailing companies, creating a fairer marketplace. By placing drivers at the center of the initiative and ensuring direct profit flow, this cooperative-based model is set to rede
