Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has urged Parliament to strengthen laws governing OTT platforms and social media to combat vulgar and abusive content. RSS Chief’s Concerns Over OTT Content

RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat recently addressed the issue during his Vijayadashami speech, blaming OTT platforms for moral corruption in society. He called for legal interventions to control inappropriate content and urged users to exercise caution. Bhagwat’s remarks have amplified discussions around regulating digital platforms.

Editorial Oversight and Cultural Sensitivities

Vaishnaw criticized the lack of editorial checks on content uploaded online, noting that while social media ensures freedom of expression, it also allows vulgar material to proliferate. BJP MP Arun Govil, famous for his portrayal of Lord Rama in the iconic “Ramayan” TV series, echoed these concerns. He suggested the establishment of a government watchdog to monitor online content, stating that much of it contradicts Indian cultural values.

Controversy Over Netflix Series

A recent Netflix series based on the 1999 Indian Airlines hijacking sparked backlash for altering terrorists’ names. Protests led to government intervention, and Netflix later assured that future content would consider Indian sentiments. This incident underscores the growing demand for stricter oversight of digital content.

Parliamentary Consensus Needed

Vaishnaw proposed that the Parliamentary Standing Committee take up the issue and work toward building a consensus for stronger regulations. The minister emphasized the importance of balancing creative freedom with cultural respect, ensuring digital platforms adhere to Indian values.

Conclusion

As debates over digital content intensify, the government aims to implement stricter regulations to curb vulgarity and protect societal values. Strengthening laws while maintaining creative freedom will be pivotal in addressing these concerns effectively.
