Bengaluru’s roads are set for a major facelift, with the Karnataka government announcing a ₹1,100 crore investment to repair potholes and build new stretches. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed that the allocation aims to deliver smooth, pothole-free roads across the city, tackling one of Bengaluru’s most persistent civic complaints.

Constituency-Wise Fund Allocation

Under the plan, 14 assembly constituencies will each receive ₹50 crore, while the remaining constituencies will get ₹25 crore each. These funds will be utilized for road repairs, resurfacing, and new construction, ensuring that all parts of the city benefit from the scheme.

Shivakumar, in a post on ‘X’, stressed that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving commuter safety and urban infrastructure.

Persistent Road Problems

Despite being India’s tech hub, Bengaluru’s road infrastructure has long been criticized. A survey by The Times of India across five city stretches found that large craters were often cordoned off with makeshift barricades or temporarily filled with cement—patchwork solutions that failed after heavy rains.

Commuters regularly describe the city’s potholes as “death traps.” In Judicial Layout, a residential hub for judges, IAS officers, and senior government officials, residents have even had children write poems about the condition of the roads and send them to the Prime Minister’s Office. Their simple plea: safer, smoother commutes.

Will The New Investment Be Enough?

While the ₹1,100 crore allocation is significant, the challenge lies in execution and durability. Bengaluru’s rapid urban expansion, frequent road digging for utilities, and heavy monsoons often undo repair work within months.

Experts suggest that alongside investment, the city needs modern road engineering practices, stricter accountability for contractors, and better drainage systems to ensure roads last longer.

A Step Towards Safer Roads

For now, the announcement is a hopeful sign for Bengaluru’s weary commuters. If implemented effectively, the initiative could mark a turning point in restoring public trust and making India’s IT capital a city where the roads match its global reputation.
