Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently shed light on the government’s proactive steps to combat cyber fraud in the digital and telecom sectors. A robust network established by the Home Ministry has reportedly prevented fraud worth ₹4,000 crore, safeguarding public funds amounting to ₹10 lakh.
Innovative Tools to Counter Fraudulent Activities
The telecom sector has introduced various technological tools to tackle fraud. A dedicated app led to the disconnection of 2.75 lakh fraudulent phone numbers and blacklisting of 10,000 headers. Furthermore, a caller identification system blocked 25-30 crore fraudulent calls within two months, showcasing the government’s commitment to curbing harmful activities.
Challenges in the Age of Advancing Technology
While these measures reflect significant progress, Scindia emphasized that technological advancements often come with potential misuse. The minister acknowledged that despite preventive steps, the scope for fraudulent activities remains, requiring continuous vigilance and public awareness.
Raising Awareness: A Key Component
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address, highlighted the growing risks of digital fraud and urged citizens to stay alert. He warned against scams involving impersonation by fraudsters posing as law enforcement officials, often referred to as “digital arrest.” These criminals exploit fear to extort money, underscoring the importance of public education in combating such threats.
The Way Forward
The government’s multi-faceted approach, combining advanced technology with public awareness campaigns, demonstrates its resolve to address cyber and telecom fraud. While significant milestones have been achieved, the evolving nature of fraud necessitates ongoing efforts to protect citizens and maintain trust in digital advancements.
