India has cancelled grid access for nearly 17 gigawatts (GW) of delayed clean energy projects in order to prioritize operational and near-completion ventures. The cancellations, carried out in the June quarter after prior notices, impact projects in renewable-rich states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, according to a Reuters report.

Renewable Developers Seek Relief as CERC Declines Interim Orders

Several major companies have been affected, including Adani Green Energy, NTPC, JSW Energy, Avaada Group, ReNew Power, and ACME Solar. On Monday, shares of Adani Green Energy (+0.9%) and JSW Energy (+1.2%) closed higher, while NTPC slipped 0.65%. Developers have approached the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) seeking relief, but interim orders have not been granted. Notably, JSW Energy’s plea was declined, with the next hearing scheduled for October 7.

Officials explained that India’s surging power demand, driven by rising incomes, industrialization, mechanized farming, and urbanization, has prompted stricter grid rules. While the government remains committed to its 2030 target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity, the existing transmission network of 495,000 circuit kilometers is under significant strain.

Developers Face Tougher Grid Rules Amid Connectivity Revocations

The Central Transmission Utility of India (CTUIL) inspected projects manually before revoking access and aims to free up transmission lines for viable ventures. Developers argue, however, that delays alone should not justify cancellations. Adani Green Energy clarified that there was “no connectivity revocation on account of delay in project commissioning dates.”

In tightening rules, authorities have prohibited developers from changing the source of generation after securing grid access. Promoters are also required to retain control until commissioning. Any violation could lead to forfeiture of bank guarantees and cancellation of connectivity rights, further underlining the government’s push for stricter compliance in renewable energy expansion.

Summary:

India has revoked grid access for 17 GW of delayed renewable projects in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, affecting firms like Adani Green, NTPC, and JSW Energy. Developers’ appeals to CERC were declined. Stricter CTUIL rules now bar generation source changes and mandate promoter control, reinforcing compliance amid rising power demand.
