India’s aviation safety regulator has introduced a new restriction banning the use of power banks to charge electronic devices during flights. The decision has been taken to address rising safety concerns linked to lithium-ion batteries, which are known to pose fire risks in confined environments like aircraft cabins.

What The New Rule Says
As per the latest safety guidelines, passengers are no longer allowed to use power banks to charge mobile phones, tablets, laptops, or any other electronic devices while the aircraft is in flight. However, power banks are not completely prohibited. Travelers can still carry them, but only in cabin baggage. Storing power banks in checked luggage remains strictly forbidden.
Why Power Banks Are Considered Risky
Lithium-ion batteries can overheat, short-circuit, or ignite due to internal defects, physical damage, or exposure to high temperatures. When such incidents occur mid-air, they can escalate rapidly. Battery fires are difficult to control and may release smoke and toxic fumes, posing serious threats to passengers and crew.
Overhead Bins Pose An Added Danger
One of the major concerns highlighted by aviation authorities is the placement of power banks in overhead compartments. If a battery overheats in an overhead bin, it may go unnoticed until the situation becomes severe. Keeping power banks in hand baggage ensures quicker detection and faster response by cabin crew.
What This Means For Air Passengers
Passengers are advised to charge their devices fully before boarding. While some aircraft may offer seat-based charging ports, the use of personal power banks for charging is not permitted at any point during the flight. Travelers should also ensure that power banks are in good condition and not damaged or swollen.
Airline Responsibility And Enforcement
Airlines are expected to actively enforce this rule through pre-flight safety announcements and onboard monitoring. Cabin crew are trained to respond swiftly to battery-related incidents, but prevention remains the primary goal of this regulation.
A Step Towards Safer Skies
This restriction reflects a broader push toward stricter aviation safety standards. As electronic devices become more powerful and battery-dependent, regulators are prioritizing passenger safety over convenience, ensuring that potential fire hazards are minimized during air travel.
