India’s aviation safety regulator has introduced a new restriction banning the use of power banks to charge electronic devices during flights. The decision has been taken to address rising safety concerns linked to lithium-ion batteries, which are known to pose fire risks in confined environments like aircraft cabins.
What The New Rule Says
As per the latest safety guidelines, passengers are no longer allowed to use power banks to charge mobile phones, tablets, laptops, or any other electronic devices while the aircraft is in flight. However, power banks are not completely prohibited. Travelers can still carry them, but only in cabin baggage. Storing power banks in checked luggage remains strictly forbidden.
Why Power Banks Are Considered Risky
Lithium-ion batteries can overheat, short-circuit, or ignite due to internal defects, physical damage, or exposure to high temperatures. When such incidents occur mid-air, they can escalate rapidly. While some aircraft may offer seat-based charging ports, the use of personal power banks for charging is not permitted at any point during the flight.
