The future of Google Search seems uncertain, and recent comments from executives have only fueled speculation. In a post that drew attention, Google’s Elizabeth Reid Kilpatrick suggested AI Mode could replace traditional search. Soon after, Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, attempted to downplay this idea, saying users shouldn’t “read too much into” Kilpatrick’s remarks. But Stein’s reassurance was equally vague—leaving more questions than answers.

Pichai’s Vision: The End of “10 Blue Links”

What is clear, however, is Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s long-term vision. He has repeatedly said the “10 blue links” era of search is outdated and described AI Mode as “a total reimagining” of how people will interact with information online. Google has already made AI Overviews the default in search results, signaling that the company sees AI as central to its future. Whether or not AI Mode completely replaces search soon, the shift is already underway.

Why This Matters for the Internet

Google processes billions of searches every day. Any major change in how results are presented will ripple through the entire internet ecosystem. Publishers, in particular, are deeply concerned. Studies suggest Google’s AI Overviews have already caused significant drops in web traffic. Google disputes this, but it has provided little transparency or convincing data to back its claims. If AI Mode further sidelines traditional search results, the economic model that supports much of online publishing could be upended.

The Reliability Problem With AI Overviews

Even setting aside the business impact, Google’s AI tools are not flawless. Investigations, including one by Mashable, show that AI Overviews often return incorrect or misleading information—sometimes presented with unwarranted confidence. In fact, Chris Taylor of Mashable found cases where AI Mode answered correctly, but AI Overviews failed. That inconsistency underscores a bigger issue: Google’s AI products still struggle with accuracy and reliability.

What Comes Next?

The mixed signals from Google suggest that a full-scale replacement of Search with AI Mode may not be imminent, but gradual integration is inevitable. The stakes are enormous: user trust, publisher survival, and the very shape of the internet economy are tied to how Google chooses to roll out AI search. Until Google provides clarity—and fixes its AI reliability problems—skepticism will remain.
