Google Pay users in India can now make UPI payments with RuPay credit cards.

Google has partnered with the National Payments Corporation of India (NCPI) to launch this initiative.

In brief

What this means is that users can link their RuPay credit cards with Google Pay to make payments to both online and offline merchants which accept RuPay credit cards.

Google Pay is a UPI-based payment app like most payments apps which only support payment using a debit card.

But now users can add their RuPay credit card and make payments seamlessly to merchants across the country.

Supporting banks

The feature is currently available to RuPay credit card holders of: 

  • Axis Bank
  • Bank of Baroda
  • Canara Bank
  • HDFC bank
  • Indian Bank
  • Kotak Mahindra Bank
  • Punjab National Bank
  • Union Bank of India 

with others soon to follow.

UPI transactions on the rise

In recent years, India has witnessed a huge rise in the number of transactions made through UPI.

UPI transactions touched 8.7 billion in March 2023.

RuPay credit cards linkage

To further bolster growth of digital payments, RBI) allowed linking of RuPay credit cards to the UPI platform in June 2022.

This made it convenient for millions of RuPay credit card users towards accessing the convenience of digital payments.

How to activate

Users need to add the RuPay credit card to Google Pay. This is as simple as adding a bank account via a debit card.

  • Open Google Pay and go to settings
  • Select the setup payment method and click on Add RuPay credit card
  • Enter details like the last six digits of the credit card, expiry date, and pin Authenticate the same using OTP
  • You can now select a RuPay credit card while making payment to any UPI vendor, which can be done by either scanning the barcode or by entering the UPI ID or the phone number of the user.
