In a major crackdown, the Indian government has blocked 357 illegal offshore gaming platforms, frozen ₹126 crore, and identified 2,400 bank accounts linked to illicit operations. This action, led by the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI), comes amidst growing concerns over financial fraud and national security risks posed by unregulated online gaming entities.

Gaming Apps Endorsed By Celebrities Under Govt Scrutiny

Celebrity Endorsements Under Scrutiny

The finance ministry has raised alarms over endorsements by Bollywood actors, cricketers, and social media influencers. These celebrities are promoting offshore gaming platforms, encouraging public participation in illegal betting and gambling activities. The ministry warned that engaging with these platforms could harm users’ finances and indirectly support unlawful activities.

Rising Enforcement Actions

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) around the corner, authorities are intensifying their efforts to monitor and shut down non-compliant platforms. Offshore operators often evade Goods and Services Tax (GST) by concealing taxable pay-ins and avoiding registration. Under GST law, online money gaming is classified as a supply of goods, subject to a 28% tax.

Major Operations and Arrests

In addition to blocking gaming sites, the DGGI has frozen bank accounts associated with platforms like Satguru Online Money Gaming, Mahakaal Online Money Gaming, and Abhi247. Around 166 mule accounts have been blocked, and three individuals operating these platforms have been arrested. Investigations are ongoing to identify further offenders.

Financial Implications

Illegal gaming platforms undermine fair competition and harm domestic businesses. In collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), enforcement agencies have attached 392 bank accounts with transactions totaling ₹122.05 crore.

Public Advisory

The government advises citizens to avoid engaging with offshore gaming platforms and instead opt for regulated services. Consumers are also encouraged to report suspicious platforms through official channels.

As enforcement actions continue, authorities remain committed to curbing illicit financial activities, ensuring a fair gaming environment, and protecting national interests. Stay informed, exercise caution, and make responsible choices in online gaming.
