Telegram, the popular messaging app, is under the scrutiny of Indian authorities due to concerns about its alleged use in extortion and gambling activities. The investigation, led by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), could have serious implications, including a potential ban on the app in India.

Find Out Why Telegram Can Be Banned In India: Investigation Is On

Why is Telegram Under Investigation?

The Indian government initiated the investigation following reports that Telegram was being used for illicit activities like extortion and gambling. These concerns have drawn significant attention, leading to a deeper probe into how the platform is being utilized by certain users.

Telegram’s founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, has also come under fire. He was recently arrested in Paris on August 24, 2024, due to concerns over the app’s moderation policies. These policies, according to authorities, may have failed to prevent criminal activities on the platform, raising alarms in multiple countries, including India.

The Role of Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C)

The I4C, a specialized wing under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is at the forefront of this investigation. Its role is crucial in determining the extent of Telegram’s involvement in illegal activities within India. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is also involved, ensuring that the platform complies with India’s stringent IT regulations.

Potential Outcomes: Will Telegram Be Banned in India?

The outcome of the investigation remains uncertain, but the implications could be significant. If the probe reveals substantial evidence of wrongdoing, the Indian government may consider banning Telegram. Such a move would be a drastic measure but one that aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to curb cybercrime and protect its citizens from online threats.

However, it’s important to note that Telegram has been in compliance with India’s Information Technology (IT) Rules, which mandate that platforms appoint a nodal officer, a chief compliance officer, and publish monthly compliance reports. These steps are crucial in ensuring that Telegram adheres to the legal framework established by the Indian government.

Global Repercussions: The Arrest of Pavel Durov

The investigation into Telegram isn’t limited to India. Telegram’s CEO, Pavel Durov, was arrested in Paris, raising further concerns about the app’s global operations. The arrest has drawn criticism from high-profile figures like Elon Musk and Edward Snowden, who have voiced their disapproval of Durov’s detention.

Durov’s arrest, coupled with the ongoing investigations in India, places Telegram in a precarious position. The platform’s future, particularly in India, hinges on the findings of the current probe.
