India’s defence production has witnessed an unprecedented rise of 174% since 2014, reaching ₹1.27 lakh crore in 2023–24. This boom is driven by a strong push for indigenous design, development, and manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign.

Exports Skyrocket

India now exports defence equipment to over 85 countries, including the US and France. Defence exports have grown 34 times over the past decade, touching ₹23,622 crore in 2024–25. The target? ₹50,000 crore by 2029.

Indigenous Systems Take the Lead

From BrahMos missiles to Akash SAMs and Light Combat Helicopter Prachand, India’s focus on homegrown military tech is bearing fruit. These systems were even deployed in missions like Operation Sindoor, showcasing India’s readiness and capability.

Strategic Corridors and Reforms

Two defence industrial corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have attracted ₹8,658 crore in investments and 253 MoUs, enhancing India’s production ecosystem.

Key policy changes like an updated Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) and the appointment of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) have streamlined acquisitions and improved tri-service coordination.

India is also working on theatre commands to unify its military operations for faster, more efficient responses.

Women in Uniform: Big Strides

The number of women officers has tripled to 11,000+, with 507 granted permanent commission, allowing for long-term careers and leadership roles in the forces.

Bold Moves on Internal Security

India showcased its counter-terror capabilities with the 2016 surgical strikes post the Uri attack. The latest—Operation Sindoor—was launched to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack and targeted camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, signalling India’s no-nonsense stance.

What Lies Ahead

India plans to double down on R&D investment to reach full self-reliance. With a ₹50,000 crore export target and growing partnerships, the country is eyeing a prominent place in the global defence manufacturing league.

From bold military operations to policy-driven manufacturing growth, the Modi government’s defence strategy is reshaping India’s position on the global stage.
