Every Doctor In India Will Get A Unique Identification Number; Enrolment Into National Registry Is Compulsory!

Common National Medical Register Implementation

After implementation, a national medical register will cover all medical practitioners in the country, as per the new regulations.

As part of this, the medical practitioner will be issued a unique identification.

This register will contain data pertaining to their degree, university, specialty along with other key information.

Basically, this register will be a common repository for key information for all medical practitioners in the country.

It will be hosted on the National Medical Commission’s website, as per the reports.

UID Mandatory For Practice

It is noteworthy here that the license generated as a result of registration with the Ethics and Medical Registration Board of NMC will be valid for five years only.

The medical practitioner will have to approach the State Medical Council for its renewal after its expiry, according to “Registration of Medical Practitioners and Licence to Practice Medicine Regulations, 2023”.

In case an application for grant of license or renewal is rejected, the applicant can approach the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) against the decision of the State medical Council, within 30 days of receipt of such decision, the regulations noted.

With this implementation, doctors will now have to get a Unique Identification Number (UID) to be able to practice medicine in the country.

The NMC ethics board will generate the UID centrally and thereby grant the practitioner registration in NMR and eligibility to practice medicine in India.

Further, the same will be maintained by the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) under the NMC.

Moving ahead, this register will contain all the entries of the registered medical practitioners of all State Registers maintained by the various State Medical Councils.

It will have all the relevant information regarding the medical practitioner.

As per this new regulation, the application for renewal of license may be made before three months of expiration of the validity of license.
