With the 5G revolution finally hitting the Indian telecom space, the telecommunications company major Ericsson has announced that it will ramp up the production of 5G gears and its capacity as well as operations at its Pune production facility in India.
The multinational telecommunications giant Ericsson, based in Stockholm, Sweden will increase the production capacity at India’s Pune centre, together with its partner, the Florida-based electronics manufacturing company Jabil Inc.
The rise in production at the unit will cater to the needs of 5G network deployments in India. The development comes as Ericsson has an upper hand in the experience of 5G gears’ production since it has already deployed 5G in more than 50 countries across the globe.
“We look forward to the opportunity of helping our partners to seamlessly transition to 5G,” says the Head of Market Area Southeast Asia, Oceania and India of Ericsson, Nunzio Mirtillo.
He added, “As 5G gets introduced in India, we are ramping up production of our 5G telecom equipment in Pune in a phased manner, to support the network deployments of Indian telecom service providers”.
The rise in production will also generate employment in Pune, as the development will expand operations with the involvement of high-technology production, creating jobs for nearly 2,000 people.
Further, the telecom giant’s ultra-lightweight antenna Massive MIMO integrated radios, namely ‘AIR 3219’ and ‘AIR 3268’ will be initially produced at the Pune unit to support the deployments of 5G.
It will also work with local partners to support its 5G production in India.
The Ericsson Mobility Report released in November 2022 stated that the number of 5G subscriptions in India are likely to jump to 690 million over the next 6 years’ period, that is by the end of 2028.
The Indian arm of Ericsson is working on setting up a technology centre that will focus upon new product introduction and production engineering to secure high-quality standards, testing/integration, and supply preparations on early-phase products, along with operational support.
