Elon Musk Makes Sharp Allegation

Elon Musk has accused unnamed Indian “oligarchs” of blocking Starlink’s entry into India, claiming they are trying to protect a “monopolistic chokehold” over internet connectivity.

Elon Musk Indirectly Blames India's Telco Giants For Starlink Delay

The SpaceX founder made the allegation in a post on X on October 7, saying that certain powerful business interests were preventing Starlink from launching its satellite internet service in India.

Musk did not name any individual, company or business group. He also did not provide evidence to support the allegation, instead telling followers that they could “guess” who he was referring to.

Starlink Says It Is Ready For India

Musk’s comments came on the same day that a senior SpaceX executive said Starlink was ready to begin operations in India once the remaining government approvals are completed.

Starlink Business Operations Vice President Lauren Dreyer said the company has already built more than 20 gateway sites across India, equipped with hundreds of antennas.

She said the company has also designed its Indian operations around the country’s security and regulatory requirements, including keeping Indian user data within the country.

According to the company, it has spent several years working with Indian regulators, telecom operators and other stakeholders to prepare for the market.

Why Has The Launch Been Delayed?

Starlink has received the necessary licence to provide satellite communication services in India, but commercial operations cannot begin until the remaining regulatory requirements are completed.

Security clearances and spectrum allocation remain among the key issues.

The government is also working through the broader regulatory framework for satellite communications, including spectrum pricing and security requirements for foreign satellite operators.

This means Starlink’s delay is not officially attributed to any particular telecom company or business group.

Competition Is Growing

India’s satellite internet market is expected to become increasingly competitive.

Starlink will face established Indian and international players, including Jio Satellite Communications and Eutelsat OneWeb, which is backed by the Bharti Group.

Amazon’s satellite internet business is also looking at the Indian market.

Traditional telecom companies have also raised questions about how satellite operators should be regulated, particularly when it comes to spectrum, security and emerging technologies such as direct-to-device connectivity.

Musk Turns Up The Pressure

Musk’s latest comments add a new political and business dimension to Starlink’s long-running effort to enter India.

While he has publicly blamed unnamed business interests, the actual reason for the remaining delay continues to involve government approvals and regulatory requirements.

For now, Starlink says its infrastructure is ready. The company is waiting for India to complete the remaining clearances before commercial services can begin.

Summary

Elon Musk has accused unnamed Indian oligarchs of blocking Starlink’s India launch to protect their control over internet connectivity. He has not named anyone or provided evidence. Starlink says it has already built more than 20 gateway sites and prepared its operations for Indian security rules. However, final regulatory clearances and spectrum-related approvals are still pending.
