Electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh may soon face a significant rise in power tariffs. The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) has begun public hearings to review proposals submitted by state power distribution companies seeking higher tariffs.
According to reports, electricity rates in the state could increase by 25% to 30% if the proposals submitted by power companies are approved by the regulator.
These hearings will examine the financial requirements of power distribution companies and determine whether the proposed tariff changes are justified.
Power Companies Cite Losses and Smart Meter Costs
Power distribution companies have argued that the tariff hike is necessary to cover rising operational expenses and financial losses. Officials say the companies have reported combined losses of nearly ₹12,000 crore in the current year.
Additionally, utilities claim they have already spent around ₹3,837 crore on installing smart meters across the state. The companies want this cost to be recovered through electricity tariffs charged to consumers.
If the regulator approves the proposal, the expenses related to smart meter deployment could be included in electricity bills.
Consumer Groups Strongly Oppose the Proposal
Consumer rights groups have strongly criticized the plan to pass the cost of smart meters onto electricity users.
The State Electricity Consumer Council argues that when the central government announced the nationwide smart meter program, it was clearly stated that the cost should not be directly recovered from consumers through tariffs.
Consumer representatives also warn that including smart meter expenses in tariffs would create a double financial burden, as many consumers already pay for meter installation when getting new electricity connections.
Concerns Over Technical Issues with Smart Meters
Apart from cost concerns, consumer groups have also raised questions about the reliability of smart meters. Some users claim there is confusion regarding meter readings and billing accuracy.
They have demanded greater transparency from power companies and have asked authorities to release data comparing smart meter readings with traditional meters.
Decision Will Impact Millions of Consumers
The public hearings will continue across several cities, including Noida, Bareilly, Varanasi, Kanpur, and Jhansi, where different power companies’ proposals will be reviewed.
The final decision by the electricity regulator will determine whether consumers in Uttar Pradesh will face a sharp rise in electricity tariffs in the coming months.
